Sunday February 26th was a night moviegoers have been waiting for. The 2017 Oscars were finally here taking place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. There was some inspirational and controversial events that happened, as there are at any award show, so here’s a recap of the night.

Many people made an appearance at the Oscars. Only few made an impression to which everyone talked about. From the bravery of Brie Larson to the beautiful performance of “How Far I’ll Go” performed by Auli’i Cravalho from the movie Moana. These artists, and many more, made the Oscars 2017 memorable.

There were a lot of events that, you could say, “made a statement.” Viola Davis’ emotional speech when she won Actress in a Supporting Role. "I'm so thankful that God chose you to bring me into this world." she directed to her parents. She then continued with a touching statement, “People ask me all the time, what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola? And I say, exhume those bodies, exhume those stories, the stories of the people who dreamed.” On the more humorous side, Jimmy Kimmel lightened things up by bringing the segment, “Mean Tweets”, from his show to the Oscars.

It seems as time goes on, the controversial speeches increase, but there are some speeches that really made an impact on people. Alvin McCraney made a heartwarming speech in support of the LGBT community. Emma Stone made a touching speech which genuinely expressed her gratitude. On the obvious note, there were more people with heartfelt speeches that spoke to many on a personal level.

The one thing people can agree on for this years Oscars, is that is was very politically charged. Jimmy Kimmel, the host, was making a lot of politically charged statements. Some actresses/actors also snuck it into their speeches.

Many people were excited to see if their favorite actresses/actors won an Oscar. Not to their surprise many talented people did. Emma Stone was one that stuck out a lot. As a well deserved winner she gave a genuine speech for her role in La La Land. People seemed to be happy about the increase in black actors/actresses that were nominated and/or won Oscars.

People were kind of disappointed at the mistake of the best picture award. They announced La La Land as the winner but then soon realized that a mistake was made and the true winner was Moonlight. Moonlight is a well deserving movie, but some fans were surely disappointed that La La Land didn’t make the cut.

Brie Larson did not applaud Casey Affleck when he was accepting his Oscar. Some say what she did was brave and honorable here's why; Affleck has some sexual harassment allegations against him, and some may not know that Brie Larson stands with sexual assault victims and even played a character who was a victim herself (which she won an Oscar for last year.) He obviously denied those allegations, but that still doesn’t mean people weren’t upset.

Winning an Oscar isn’t just about hard work and determination, for some it’s about controversial speeches. As mentioned before McCraney made a speech for the LGBT community and included some statements toward the one and only, President Trump, as did many other winners. Now for Trump haters this was a night to laugh at, but for the Trump supporters this was pretty upsetting. From their side, the Oscars are not an event to ramble on about their political ideals, so hearing a lot of speeches bashing the president was irritating.

Some people don’t really care for anything that happens at the Oscars. “I don't care. I don't know who won what. They are all famous people, and they don’t have the

great legacy they think they have created” said Casey Jones, a PACT Charter School junior.

Clearly some don’t care much for the Oscars, and think that it is not only a waste of time, they also think the actors’ and actresses’ attitudes and personalities are not worth caring about. Regardless of how people feel about the Oscars, I think we can all agree this is a great achievement in the field of acting and cinema. With all of this controversy from the 2017 Oscars, we can only hope that next year it will be an event for all to enjoy.
